The Music of Adventure Time: Interview with Composer Tim Kiefer

Just as Cartoon Network’s hit series Adventure Time is on its final countdown before the epic finale, what a better way say our goodbyes than taking the time to appreciate the best aspects of the series. Adventure Time took place in the mystical land of Ooo where many fascinating oddities galore. Jake the dog and Finn the human, the inseparable duo found themselves in an endless number of adventures along with other characters such as Princess Bubblegum, Beemo, Lumpy Space Princess, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Ice King and more. Adventure Time is something that you would think came straight out of a magical, colorful, unique daydream. If you’re pleased with the visuals, then you’ve definitely heard the music behind the show.

AdventureTime

The story lines and adventures that came about in this series was everything, but the musical composition behind those scenes made it all tie together in a perfect knot. Think of a mystical and enchanting, followed by epic, and you’ll get the music from Adventure Time. Since the beginning, there has been some musical masterminds behind the soundtrack of this show, and I am honored to have a chance to speak with one of them. Upon the ending of Adventure Time, I am honored to have had the chance to interview composer Tim Kiefer about his favorite musical moments and best memories from working on the past 10 seasons of Adventure Time.

Tk-1.png

Cartoon Buzz: Hi Tim! Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. So you have been working on Adventure Time as a composer for a majority of the episodes. Tell me a bit about the process it takes to compose a track for the adventurous & mystical series.

Tim Kiefer: Hey! Yeah, it’s been a long time and a lot of episodes. For the most part Pen/Adam would relay the mood and timing of what they wanted, then let me choose my own musical palette. That freedom meant I could mess around with all my favorite musical influences – Scandinavian skweee, Southside Chicago juke or footwork, 8bit nostalgia, or braindance – so long as I was expressive and earnest. I’d have as much as 2 weeks for some episodes and as little as 4 days for others, so some would be super intricate and polished while others were raw and edgy. Either way there was a beauty to how each came together.

Cartoon Buzz: So you collaborated with creator Pendleton Ward throughout the series. What are some moments that you’ll never forget while working with the man behind the show?

Tim Kiefer: Most of all, developing a sound with Casey around Pen’s “buddy music” concept, in which bros are just relaxed, comfortable and imaginative. It was at the very least grounding, if not meditative.
Cartoon Buzz: When composing music for the show, did you often envision viewers like me listening to it? How did you want us to feel or react?
Tim Kiefer: I wanted to paint vivid sound paintings that brought viewers deeeep into the Adventure Time universe as they watched. And most importantly, keep everyone happily on their toes – mashing up esoteric music movements with familiar pop sounds, finding weird ways to play normal instruments, you name it. Just constantly reinforcing how unique and magical the alternate reality of Ooo was.

Cartoon Buzz: How did you get into being a composer? Is it something that you always saw yourself doing or did you become inspired along the way?

Tim Kiefer: Well, I have this eerily accurate epitaph I made as a little kid for school or something, it reads: “Here lies Tim. He made millions of people happy with his music.” I guess it was just always the plan.
Cartoon Buzz: What was it like working on the series early on compared to working on the last episode?

Tim Kiefer: The whole Adventure Time universe was simpler back in the old days, and so was the music. The characters didn’t have much to worry about so there was a lot of chill “buddy music” or party tunes. After 8 years, the series ends on a pretty serious note and you can really feel the weight and complexity of the characters’ journey embedded in the music. I can’t help but tear up when I watch through the finale, it’s so emotionally loaded.
Cartoon Buzz: What are your favorite musical moments from the past 10 seasons?
Tim Kiefer: A few: Fionna & Prince Gumball talking about butts in “Fionna & Cake”, Bananaman’s workout music in “The New Frontier”, Oh What A Good Boy Am I montage in “Five More Short Graybles”, Megamush battle in “Mama Said”.

Cartoon Buzz: I’ll regret not asking this later if I don’t, and this may be a toughie, but who is your all time favorite character on Adventure Time?

Tim Kiefer: I’m a Tree Trunks guy!

Cartoon Buzz: If you could describe Adventure Time in FIVE words, what would they be?

Tim Kiefer: The Hero’s Journey Meets Spongebob

Cartoon Buzz: Many fans are heartbroken that Adventure Time is ending. Is there anything you would like to say to them?

Tim Kiefer: Keep it going in your own way.. it’s everyone’s story to finish.

And that’s the end folks! I want to thank Tim Kiefer for taking the time to chat with me!

Lizard People Are Real According to the Babies in Rugrats #6 Comic

Thanks to Grandpa Lou and his tin foil conspiracy theories, Tommy and the babies have come to the horrifying conclusion that lizard people are real. While Lou was showing Tommy the “evidence” of how the moon landing was fake, Stu and Didi puts a stop to Tommy being sucked into the conspiracy world at such a young age. Stu announces that he’s taking the babies to the golf course, but Lou insists that the golf course is the “classic hangout of the world’s elite aka the reptilian-lizard people”. He also pushed the conspiracy even further by mentioning that the golf course has pyramids and windmills in one place.

While the babies were at the golf course, Tommy tried to convince the others of Grandpa’s claims. At first Chuckie, Phil & Lil were not buying the fact that lizard people are real, but after Tommy’s many explanations; such as how the pyramids were built without trucks back in the ancient Egyptian days and how grandpa Lou is older than his dad, so he MUST be smarter, the babies might be convinced after all.

Rick and Morty Fans Petition for the Show to Be Renewed for Season 4

rick-and-morty-rixty-minutessource: Adult Swim

Things are getting pretty intense in the fandom of the epic sci-fi series Rick and Morty. Who knew the most popular cartoon around right now could have any drama that comes with it? It seems like just yesterday when there was a total freak out over McDonald’s running out of Szechuan sauce, but now there is a bigger issue. Co-creator and writer Dan Harmon revealed on Twitter that Adult Swim has not renewed the series for season 4 yet and that it’s pretty much uncertain on what the future looks like. And thus, the national panic began.

You would think that a show like Rick and Morty that has popularity that is rarely heard of nowadays, which broke Adult Swim’s viewership record, to be the apple of the network’s eye and season 4 ordered right away. In all honestly, I expected the show to be renewed right in the midst of season three’s reign. This just isn’t making sense at all and I understand the outcry and panic of fans. Of course, I don’t quite suspect that Adult Swim would do anything insane like cancel or abandon the series, so let’s not jump so far into the conclusion pot.

Luckily with a power fandom like Rick and Morty’s, fans are taking matter into their own hands. I’m not talking ordering the season and making it themselves, although can you imagine? There has been a petition made with a goal of 6,000 signatures and already over 5,500 fans have signed it. I applaud the Rick and Morty fandom for not taking this situation likely. After all, it is the show that wouldn’t have the success it does without your support (besides the epic and amazing team behind it of course). With fans and creators, teamwork makes the dream work at the end of the day. You can find the petition here: https://www.thepetitionsite.com/940/304/408/renew-rick-and-morty-for-season-4/

Adult Swim, please end this madness and announce the renewal of Rick and Morty for season 4 already. Unless, there’s a clever and creative trick up your sleeves to how exactly you’re going to announce season 4’s renewal or release date. Also, if this is another surprise season premiere then BRAVO, because you have everyone fooled right now.

The Krusty Krab vs. The Chum Bucket: Another SpongeBob Meme is Taking Over Twitter

Just when the evil Patrick memes were dying down. Once again, it really shows how influential SpongeBob Squarepants is. I mean, it has been running for 19 years after all.

We all know SpongeBob’s workplace & pretty much the most popular fast food restaurant in Bikini Bottom is the Krusty Krab. A Krabby Patty must be good, because that place stays busy and Mr. Krabs’ wallet stays stuffed. On the contrary, there’s another restaurant across the way known as The Chum Bucket, which is way less popular and is pretty sketchy if you know the real life definition of a “chumbucket”. Of course, the internet just knows how to make things even more interesting. The latest meme is people comparing two real life things using the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket, with the Krusty Krab being the most favorable thing and the Chum Bucket being the least favorable. Looks like a meme is going to be the cause of World War III.

Of course with a comparison like this, someone spills some truth tea.

There’s love for both here, by the way. ;)

Garfield Is Back with a New Limited Comic Series

garfield comic 2018

Our favorite lasagna loving cat is back for another comic series. BOOM! Studios and PAWS Inc are proud to announce GARFIELD: HOMECOMING #1, a new four-issue limited series debuting in June 2018. Feeling mistreated and unappreciated by Jon, Garfield embarks on a journey for a new home and, along the way, meets up with a clown who works in an old-timey travelling circus. Convinced that this is the place for him, Garfield becomes part of the act. Wait. What is that cannon for?

GARFIELD was born on the comics pages on June 19, 1978. The comic strip is centered on the lives of a quick-witted orange cat who loves lasagna, coffee, and his remote control; Jon Arbuckle, his owner; and Odie, a sweet but dumb dog. GARFIELD was introduced to the world in just 41 newspapers and is now the most widely syndicated comic strip ever, appearing in 2100 newspapers. The strip, distributed by Andrews McMeel Syndication, is read by over 220 million people each day and is translated into 42 languages.

The success of the comic strip spawned an entertainment empire including television: Garfield and Friends, The Garfield Show, and a dozen primetime specials; movies: Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties; hundreds of best-selling books, and thousands of licensed products.

Writer Scott Nickel (Garfield: His 9 Lives) will pair with a different artist in each issue of GARFIELD: HOMECOMING, as Sara Talmadge (Steven Universe) takes us through this wild ride in the first chapter of Garfield’s journey outside of the friendly confines of Jon’s house.

“Putting Garfield on the road in GARFIELD: HOMECOMING allows him to meet a variety of new characters – both friend and foe – and his journey takes him to some interesting and unexpected places,” said writer Scott Nickel. “We hope fans enjoy the ride.”

“I’ve always loved Garfield and getting to take him on an all new adventure with Scott and the team at BOOM! Studios was such a thrill!” said artist Sara Talmadge. “Garfield’s taking on the circus with his usual sass and legendary appetite… But can he be the new star act that the circus needs?  Every page in this issue was a total blast to draw (I mean, what’s more fun than the circus?), and I hope you enjoy it too!”

Clueless Is Returning for ‘One Last Summer’ in Fall 2018 Comic

unnamed (6)Clueless: One Last Summer Cover by Natacha Bustos

Los Angeles, CA (February 27, 2018) – Cher, Dionne and Tai return this Fall inCLUELESS: ONE LAST SUMMER from BOOM! Studios.  As a follow up to the 2017 smash hit Clueless: Senior Year, BOOM! has reunited the writing duo of actress, filmmaker, and author Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Witches of Echo Park, Death’s Daughter) and author Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex, Barbie) with artist Siobhan Keenan (Adventure Time) for another comic book based on Paramount Picture’s hit film.

In CLUELESS: ONE LAST SUMMER, Cher, Dionne and Tai journey out for their final summer vacation before they head off to college and the world of adulthood.  However when life threatens to topple their elaborate plans for the summer to remember, they’ll be challenged to stay true to their best selves amidst the chaos. Luckily they’ve got each other to lean on, because that’s what best friends are for…and because no one stops Cher when she makes up her mind!

“I am so excited to jump back into a second ‘totes excellent’ Clueless collaboration with Sarah  Kuhn and Siobhan Keenan,” said Amber Benson. “I feel like when the three of us work together there is a real synergy that makes Cher, Dionne, and Tai’s world come alive. This next installment of the Clueless comic is all about what happens in the summer before the ladies head off to college – and it will be chock full of the good stuff: friendship, romance, and mystery…with a heavy dose of that ’90s Clueless nostalgia that makes the comic so much fun.”

“I’m so excited to take these girls on some ridiculous summer adventures—as long-time Angelenos, Amber and I are entertaining each other way too much coming up with what, exactly, a Clueless summer vacation looks like and which ’90s songs pair perfectly with every page” said Sarah Kuhn. “And we can’t wait to see what fabulous summer ensembles Siobhan puts the girls in! I am also really loving getting the chance to explore a character who I adore, but hasn’t gotten much of a spotlight yet in the Clueless-verse: Summer, who was played in the movie by the great Nicole Bilderback. Summer’s presence as an amazingly-dressed Asian girl who got to be part of Cher’s cool crowd was always super important to me and I am thrilled to say she has a big part in this book.”

“I’m so ready to draw the Clueless gang again!” said Siobhan Keenan. “With both Amber and Sarah at the writing helm again, I know I’m going to have a great time drawing Cher, Dionne, and Tai’s summer adventures—and I’m so excited to draw and explore new characters, too! Summer vacation is always a memorable time, so it’ll be a dream to dress up everyone in memorable outfits, too.”

CLUELESS: ONE LAST SUMMER, featuring a cover illustrated by Natacha Bustos (Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy), is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such asLumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Misfit City by Kiwi Smith, Kurt Lustgarten and Naomi Franquiz; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

Clueless: Senior Year was a charming, witty and heartfelt story—all the same elements that made the film an instant classic,” says Shannon Watters, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “I’m thrilled that we get to reunite the amazing women, both on the page and behind the story, to explore even more stories with Cher, Dionne and Tai at BOOM! Box.”

Print copies of CLUELESS: ONE LAST SUMMER will be available for sale in Fall 2018 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), book stores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

This Rick and Morty Fan Theory Just Might Be on to Something

rick and mortysource: Adult Swim

Rick and Morty is the sci-fi cartoon that has taken the world by storm. It’s become the most-watched series in the history of Adult Swim and has led to a total pop culture domination. It’s memorable episodes has inspired many fan-crazed memes, outcries, and most of all theories. The are an amazing amount of theories about Rick and Morty out there, and some of them are not totally far-fetched. I mean, anything could be possible with a show surrounds the unordinary life of 14-year-old Morty Smith who goes on extreme adventures to other dimensions with his alcoholic, mad scientist grandfather Rick Sanchez, who has proved himself to be pretty much the smartest man alive. But what if Morty is just as smart as Rick or has the potential to be? That is just what this fan theory states:

Crazy it may sound to some, it’s really not when you add up all of the evidence that we already have. Morty just might not be the awkward, shaky-voiced, character that many know him to be. Rick sees something in Morty and maybe we haven’t been really paying close attention to it. Notice how Rick is always discouraging Morty from going to school, stating how it’s “not a place for smart people”. That quote may sound absurd to most, but think of it as a sign. Rick possibly sees something in Morty that he considers is way beyond an average high school education. When Morty wants to do normal teenage things like asking his crush out or when the subject is on procreation and romance, here comes grandpa Rick, insisting that Morty “break the cycle and focus on science.” Why would Rick be pushing Morty this hard and taking him on his insane adventures if he didn’t think his grandson has the potential to become as genius as he is one day? Not to mention, these adventures are often life-threatening. I don’t think Rick would bother taking Morty along if he thought he couldn’t handle it. If you aren’t convinced by now, what if I said there’s also evidence that ties in with Evil Morty?

evil morty

Evil Morty. He’s a fan favorite that has been the center of many fan theories, and now this one. Friendly reminder that Evil Morty challenged the Council of Ricks and won in a campaign. This could be a hint that a Morty is more capable than you think, including our Morty. Meanwhile in the same episode, Rick states how “a cocky Morty can be a real bad thing for everyone.” When Morty asks “How is that?”, Rick replies with “Uh, I’ll explain when you’re older.” and then just like that. The episode cuts to the scene where Evil Morty is revealed as the mastermind behind the episode’s plot. I don’t think a coincidence is logical at this point. Rick is aware of Morty’s dangerous intelligence, and Evil Morty just might be a symbol of this. It’s only a matter of time before it’s revealed.

A huge thanks to Alex Ducey for this fascinating theory. You can find his original fan theory herehttps://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/6wc4yn/rick_and_morty_morty_is_as_smart_as_rick/ I highly suggest you read his full theory. It highlights so much that you probably haven’t thought about before.

TBS Will Renew ‘American Dad’ for Two More Seasons & Premiere New Animation Block

Seth MacFarlane’s other comedic family will be here to stay for two more seasons, as TBS renews it for a 16th and 17th season.

american-dad-renewed-season-16Courtesy of TBS

American Dad features a CIA agent, Stan Smith, who unlike his profession is very much eccentric and far from serious at times. Stan does not go through numerous situations alone – as he has his upper-middle class family – liberal free-spirit daughter Hayley, dorky and awkward son Steve, his wife Francine, who’s a homemaker and always trying to keep things together… kind of. Not to forget the infamous character Roger, a sassy alien who is always in disguise and the family’s pet fish Klaus, who was once a human East German Olympic ski-jumper until the CIA transferred his vocal cords and brain into a gold fish body.

Though the series debuted on FOX in 2005, American Dad moved to TBS in 2014 where it became the “key performer” of the network. Like its sister-comedy Family Guy, the show often uses black comedy or controversial humor. Season 15 originally premiered in late 2017 and will continue with new episodes through 2018, starting on February 12. American Dad remains in the list of long-running cartoons.

final space tbsCourtesy of TBS

This great news doesn’t just involve American Dad. TBS is also premiering a new hour-long animation block every Monday, with a new series called “Final Space” following American Dad. The series surrounds a spaceman named Gary, who’s working off a prison sentence. He comes across a mysterious Alien named Mooncake who he soon becomes friends and bonds with. Unfortunately Gary doesn’t realize that Mooncake is wanted by the villainous Lord Commander who is determined to use Mooncake’s powers for evil. Final Space is set to premiere on February 26th at 10:30 p.m.

“Animation has played a huge role in making us the #1 comedy network,” said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of programming for TBS. “We will keep the momentum going with the two season pick up of ‘American Dad’ and finally introducing the world to the brilliantly constructed misadventures of Gary in ‘Final Space.’”

Hey Arnold Fans Are Officially Petitioning for Season 6

hey-arnold-season-6source: Nickelodeon

Hey Arnold fans are experiencing some post-revival movie syndrome, which means they want more. The Jungle Movie brought back a lot of nostalgic feelings and memories for those who have watched the show since it’s premiere in the 90s. Should Hey Arnold continue for a sixth season? Well, earlier this year at New York Comic Con, the creator and cast didn’t deny it one bit but instead insisted that if The Jungle Movie did well, it could lead to a season 6 or further. There isn’t a doubt that this movie did the right numbers for the franchise to be revived.

After The Jungle Movie’s big premiere, all of the fan theories and mysteries that ever existed about Hey Arnold were solved. Helga and Arnold are a couple, after years of Helga suppressing her feelings through angry tactics towards him. Phoebe and Gerald were always favored to end up together, so it’s about time! Brainy finally got closure from Helga after being knocked out a few thousand times throughout the series. I’d say Helga truly received the most character development in this movie. But the long-awaited mystery was truly unveiled when Arnold found his parents alive and well. If only we can hear all of the sighs of relief from everyone watching. Something to also note and be relieved about is seeing Pigeon Man again. Let’s just say there’s a fan theory out there that painted a dark picture for that character. Moving on!

Now that the movie came, conquered, and made many emotional, why shouldn’t there be a season 6? This isn’t a bad idea and the team is behind it and willing to make it happen. Rebooting Hey Arnold will make room for new adventures and really set the stage for Arnold and Helga’s relationship. Plus, seeing life at home for Miles and Stella as they raise their son is something worth watching. I can see why there are people defending this idea. Hopefully, the network backs this because the fans sure are. Recently a petition was created and it’s spreading like wildfire, so if you want to support Hey Arnold having a sixth season, you can find the petition link below:
