Star vs. The Forces of Evil Is Powerful and Progressive

What can we expect from a show that features a female lead from another dimension with powers, characters with strong personalities and constant development, and also the inclusion of characters with different backgrounds? Well this show just may have been the powerful gold ticket to bring Disney back to the A-game. A for animated that is. Not to mention a truly entertaining plot and characters that you just can’t help becoming attached to. Star vs The Forces of Evil is just as powerful as the main character herself.

As it may have been too obvious to point out at the time, I do feel like both Disney networks (Disney Channel and Disney XD) have went through a dry-spell period regarding cartoons. Most new cartoons that did premiere were often given the cancelled treatment far too soon. A majority of acquired programming were quickly pulled from Disney XD in 2017. I was worried for the future of the channel. Let’s not forget that Disney XD was the replacement for “Toon Disney” back in the day. Toon Disney was a place for the cartoons of Disney to have a center stage. I didn’t expect the new channel to live up to the expectations of those who watched Toon Disney, but I did not want to see animated series being abandoned or looked as an afterthought. But in the past three years or so, I saw a positive shift in the network towards creating more original animated series, and I feel that it truly started with Star vs. The Forces of Evil.

starvsforcesofevilsource: Disney

Premiering in 2015 and created by Daron Leah Nefcy, Star vs The Forces of Evil began with a Star Butterfly, a princess from another dimension who found herself in a major whoopsie when she accidentally sets fire to her family’s castle. Star is sent to Earth by her parents to complete her magic training as a foreign exchange student. She then meets Marco Diaz, who becomes a guidance in her life and a sort of voice of reason. Marco is always protective over Star, and vice versa. It kind of pushes the predictions that the two may end up together in the series one day. For now, Marco will just have to deal with Star’s current boyfriend Tom Lucitor, a demon prince from the underworld with anger issues he tries to control. Princess Star possess powers strong enough to fight off, well, evil of course. She always finds herself fighting off her number one enemy Ludo and his army, though sometimes she is willing to cooperate with him. Star is always accompanied by her Mewni best friend Pony Head, who’s so possessive of their friendship she often treats Marco poorly in the process.

r_starvstheforcesofevil_hero_359432e3source: Disney

After Star vs. The Forces of Evil’s premiere it became Disney XD’s #1 animated series ever with 1.2 million viewers. The series has average-to-high ratings and quite positive reviews for it, as it should. As a series, Star vs. The Forces of Evil is powerful and gives off a strong message. It features characters of different ethnicities, personalities, and even sexualities. Early 2017, the show featured Disney’s first ever same-sex kiss(es) on any series, during the 39th episode “Just Friends” in the second season.

163323source: Disney

It was very brave and awesome of the creator to provide representation for young people a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s also worth mentioning that the creator Daron Leah Nefcy is the second woman ever to create an animated Disney series. The progressive content of this series didn’t stop there of course.

princess-turdinasource: Disney

More recently in November 2017, Star vs. The Forces of Evil premiered an episode that featured Marco in disguise as a princess. Later when he is outed as a boy, that didn’t stop other princesses from continuing to defend him.

“That doesn’t prove anything! Princesses can be hairy!”

“Why does it matter if he’s a boy?”

“He can be a princess if he wants to”

Season 3 Episode 16

BRAVO! Score 1000 for Disney and the SVTFOE team. This series is doing a brilliant job of representation and being groundbreaking. It was renewed for a fourth season in 2017 so we will get to see more of Star, Marco, Tom & the others hopefully very soon.

This Rick and Morty Fan Theory Just Might Be on to Something

rick and mortysource: Adult Swim

Rick and Morty is the sci-fi cartoon that has taken the world by storm. It’s become the most-watched series in the history of Adult Swim and has led to a total pop culture domination. It’s memorable episodes has inspired many fan-crazed memes, outcries, and most of all theories. The are an amazing amount of theories about Rick and Morty out there, and some of them are not totally far-fetched. I mean, anything could be possible with a show surrounds the unordinary life of 14-year-old Morty Smith who goes on extreme adventures to other dimensions with his alcoholic, mad scientist grandfather Rick Sanchez, who has proved himself to be pretty much the smartest man alive. But what if Morty is just as smart as Rick or has the potential to be? That is just what this fan theory states:

Crazy it may sound to some, it’s really not when you add up all of the evidence that we already have. Morty just might not be the awkward, shaky-voiced, character that many know him to be. Rick sees something in Morty and maybe we haven’t been really paying close attention to it. Notice how Rick is always discouraging Morty from going to school, stating how it’s “not a place for smart people”. That quote may sound absurd to most, but think of it as a sign. Rick possibly sees something in Morty that he considers is way beyond an average high school education. When Morty wants to do normal teenage things like asking his crush out or when the subject is on procreation and romance, here comes grandpa Rick, insisting that Morty “break the cycle and focus on science.” Why would Rick be pushing Morty this hard and taking him on his insane adventures if he didn’t think his grandson has the potential to become as genius as he is one day? Not to mention, these adventures are often life-threatening. I don’t think Rick would bother taking Morty along if he thought he couldn’t handle it. If you aren’t convinced by now, what if I said there’s also evidence that ties in with Evil Morty?

evil morty

Evil Morty. He’s a fan favorite that has been the center of many fan theories, and now this one. Friendly reminder that Evil Morty challenged the Council of Ricks and won in a campaign. This could be a hint that a Morty is more capable than you think, including our Morty. Meanwhile in the same episode, Rick states how “a cocky Morty can be a real bad thing for everyone.” When Morty asks “How is that?”, Rick replies with “Uh, I’ll explain when you’re older.” and then just like that. The episode cuts to the scene where Evil Morty is revealed as the mastermind behind the episode’s plot. I don’t think a coincidence is logical at this point. Rick is aware of Morty’s dangerous intelligence, and Evil Morty just might be a symbol of this. It’s only a matter of time before it’s revealed.

A huge thanks to Alex Ducey for this fascinating theory. You can find his original fan theory herehttps://www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/6wc4yn/rick_and_morty_morty_is_as_smart_as_rick/ I highly suggest you read his full theory. It highlights so much that you probably haven’t thought about before.

Loving-Vincent-1200x600-c-defaultsource: BreakThru Productions Trademark Films

Loving Vincent is the world’s first painted featured film, and the story surrounds the mystery behind Vincent van Gogh’s death in 1890. Interesting enough, the film was done by 125 painters and they used the same technique as Van Gogh. Congrats to all of the nominees!

‘Apple & Onion’ Pilot Review

In early 2017 it was reported that a new show was greenlit and set to emerge on Cartoon Network sometime in 2018. It’s finally a new year and that means a new opportunity to see what will take place in the cartoon world. Apple & Onion takes place in a world of anthropomorphic food with human emotions and struggles. Though the synopsis seems humorous enough, there are some lessons to be learned from this community of food. A literal food for thought.

In a New York or Chicago-esque big city setting, there’s a pair of produce pals who have a lot to learn about growing up. Though they seem to have everything set by having their own place and all, Apple & Onion are two kids at heart and are often failing at attempts to do adult things. The pilot begins with ‘Wake Up Time’, a song made by Apple that apparently helps the two get into the swing of things in the morning. “♫ Wake up time. 5:49. Feeling fine ’cause it’s wake up time. ♫” It was a funny bit that turned into a slight dilemma for the two when they realize they could’ve woke up at a more realistic 8:49, because it fit with the song as well, and the two ended up oversleeping into the afternoon. When Apple & Onion were awaken by the blaring sound of a notification from their computer, they find out that they were invited to a party by Hotdog and Burger. Not realizing that they were invited on accident, Apple & Onion are thrilled and immediately prints out the information to the party. Onion is even more stoked when he notices his crush French Fry on the guest list. As they practice their dance moves on the sidewalk while wearing a number of flashy toy items, they run into Burger and French Fry. Burger, almost pointing out that Apple & Onion were invited to the party on accident, backtracks and tells them the party is a simple, grown-up dinner party. Apple & Onion are slightly discouraged and realize that they have to grow up. The two go on a crazy journey of adulthood that may take them places where they didn’t expect to go.

Apple & Onion was created by George Gendi, who was a former storyboard artist for The Amazing World of Gumball and Sanjay and Craig. Gendi is also the voice of 1/2 of the main characters, Apple. This pilot was originally screened at the Annecy Festival in 2015. It was eventually uploaded online in May 2016. I applaud Cartoon Network for keeping their mini-sodes releases going, as it shows the evergrowing creativity in the animation industry and gives creators solid platforms where their work could possibly be greenlit onto the big network. It’s great that Apple & Onion is getting a chance to premiere as a full series and there’s no doubt that this show is bound to be some sort of success for the network. It’s slice-of-life humor and unique characterizations is already drawing in a positive impression. I’m working up an appetite for these characters. I mean, the appetite of learning more about their backgrounds and development of course. Also, I have a little prediction about some events that may take place in the series. So French Fry is Onion’s crush, but she was seen walking from the store with Burger when they ran into Apple & Onion. They could be just friends… or something more. What usually goes good with a Burger? That’s right. Now we know things went well for Onion and French Fry at the end of the pilot, but if he goofs off and messes things up, Burger and French Fry just might become the pair that they’re expected to be. Looks like we have the first fan theory.

Interesting fact: Eugene Mirman is the voice of Gene Belcher from Bob’s Burgers. Now he’s voicing the character Burger in Apple & Onion.

The Major Problem with Family Guy’s 300th Episode

Just a head’s up, this post contains SPOILERS from Episode 300 (S16E11) of Family Guy. Please continue at your own risk.

Family_Guy_2745557bsource: FOX

Not every episode of a TV show is going to be peachy keen. You could be the biggest fan of a show and still find its flaws and loopholes. It’s normal. Even great shows like Family Guy are going to have episodes where you are going to find yourself questioning certain aspects of it. I mean of course Family Guy is not intended for the easily offended, but that’s not what I mean. I mean regarding the content and flow of things, there are some things that you just wish the writers did differently. Unfortunately, this is the case with episode 300. This past weekend FOX premiered Family Guy’s 300th episode. The show will turn 19 years old in two weeks and still going pretty strong 16 seasons later. Though the series hasn’t had its major theatrical movie yet, it has had much success that lead to video games & book adaptions. With such great work that the team behind Family Guy puts together, you just can’t slam it as a whole. However, I have to be completely honest. Episode 300 was pretty emotional because it represented losing something that is near and dear to you. Oh and Peter is literally every teenage girl when they meet their idol.

Episode 300 started out smooth and easygoing, with no reference that it is the 300th episode. Starting off with Peter’s gag of having to have the grocery list items separately pinned to him by Lois, you would think this would be just an ordinary episode where Peter just goofs off… which is was. The main story line actually surrounded Stewie, Brian and Rupert. Brian planned on binge-watching all of the Fast & Furious movies with Stewie and Rupert. Growing tired and annoyed by Stewie’s constant “conversation” with his plush bear, Brian decides to go out and drink instead. Stewie’s “conversation” with Rupert later turns into an “argument” and Stewie storms upstairs. Stewie later comes back and finds Rupert in pieces and Brian sleeping on the couch after a night of drinking. While in hysterics over Rupert’s “death”, Stewie attacks Brian. Brian admits to mistaking Rupert as a chew toy. In this moment, I was questioning Brian’s explanation. Later on in the episode I come to find out that I was right. Brian confesses that he intentionally “killed” Rupert, because he’s tired of always coming second in Stewie’s eyes.

The episode ends with Stewie and Brian coming to some sort of resolution as they scatter Rupert’s ashes on the mountains, followed by It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday playing with Rupert and Paul Walker driving away, a parody of the scene from The Fast and the Furious. Oh and not to mention the big mistake that the writers made: Brian ends up buying Stewie a new Rupert. The last five minutes or so made the entire episode pretty pointless. For them to go through all the trouble of making viewers sad with that musical montage, just for Brian to buy him another bear wasn’t necessary. We all know it isn’t the original Rupert, come on Family Guy writers!

TBS Will Renew ‘American Dad’ for Two More Seasons & Premiere New Animation Block

Seth MacFarlane’s other comedic family will be here to stay for two more seasons, as TBS renews it for a 16th and 17th season.

american-dad-renewed-season-16Courtesy of TBS

American Dad features a CIA agent, Stan Smith, who unlike his profession is very much eccentric and far from serious at times. Stan does not go through numerous situations alone – as he has his upper-middle class family – liberal free-spirit daughter Hayley, dorky and awkward son Steve, his wife Francine, who’s a homemaker and always trying to keep things together… kind of. Not to forget the infamous character Roger, a sassy alien who is always in disguise and the family’s pet fish Klaus, who was once a human East German Olympic ski-jumper until the CIA transferred his vocal cords and brain into a gold fish body.

Though the series debuted on FOX in 2005, American Dad moved to TBS in 2014 where it became the “key performer” of the network. Like its sister-comedy Family Guy, the show often uses black comedy or controversial humor. Season 15 originally premiered in late 2017 and will continue with new episodes through 2018, starting on February 12. American Dad remains in the list of long-running cartoons.

This great news doesn’t just involve American Dad. TBS is also premiering a new hour-long animation block every Monday, with a new series called “Final Space” following American Dad. The series surrounds a spaceman named Gary, who’s working off a prison sentence. He comes across a mysterious Alien named Mooncake who he soon becomes friends and bonds with. Unfortunately Gary doesn’t realize that Mooncake is wanted by the villainous Lord Commander who is determined to use Mooncake’s powers for evil. Final Space is set to premiere on February 26th at 10:30 p.m.

“Animation has played a huge role in making us the #1 comedy network,” said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of programming for TBS. “We will keep the momentum going with the two season pick up of ‘American Dad’ and finally introducing the world to the brilliantly constructed misadventures of Gary in ‘Final Space.’”
