What We Already Know About the NickToons Movie

cartoon buzz nicktoons movie

Back in September 2015, it was announced that a NickToons movie was in early development by Paramount Pictures. It would be a cross-over movie with some of the most famous NickToons characters from Nickelodeon’s classic shows such as Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc. The film is said to have an “Avengers style” theme by many sources. Some Classic NickToons fans definitely were ecstatic at the fact that the network hasn’t forgotten about its roots, others were wondering what the hell Nickelodeon was thinking. Despite the mixed opinions, the movie is happening, and here’s what we already know about it:

  • Jared Hess will be directing. Author & director of the very notable book & film Napoleon Dynamite.
  • Ren & Stimpy will NOT be in the film. Co-creator of the show Bob Camp told screen geek in March that Paramount wanted nothing to do with the idea and that their adult sequel “poisoned the well”.
  • The film is set to be released on July 31, 2020.

It’s quite obvious that Nick is trying to get back those viewers that some of their new content just isn’t bringing to the table. Appealing to the 90s lover’s culture by rebooting their classics may be a smart strategy. With the Hey Arnold & Rocko’s Modern Life TV movies on the way, I’m almost sure millions will be watching to see just how dedicated Nickelodeon is to rebooting it’s classics.

It’s Been 20 Years Since Playhouse Disney Launched

Photo: Disney

If you recall your 7 year old self falling asleep to Disney Channel after watching episodes of The Proud Family, Kim Possible & more, then you recall waking up for school to the sound of Madeline, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Rolie Polie Olie or Stanley playing on your TV. Playhouse Disney was the early morning programming block for kids ages 3-8 on Disney Channel. It was sort of like an alarm that let you know that it’s time to wake up for school when you heard the theme song to The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which usually came on at 6am PST. Ah, the nostalgic memories of staying up late watching cartoons on Disney Channel only to wake up to even more cartoons. Those were the simpler times.

On May 8th, Playhouse Disney turned 20 years old and I couldn’t feel more old. Sorry if that sounds cliche, but it’s the truth. The shows on Playhouse Disney really made waking up fun. Everything from the theme songs to the characters. Unfortunately Playhouse Disney became Disney Junior in 2011, but I hope the kids of today will have fond memories of it one day. Happy 20th Anniversary Playhouse Disney!

Is TeenNick’s Classic Nickelodeon Block ‘The Splat’ a Hit?

Photo: Nickelodeon

It’s been a year since the week of TeenNick debuting it’s revamped 80s, 90s & early 2000s block as The Splat and filled your late night hours with even more classic Nickelodeon shows. Some have argued that block started out as a hit and then ended up in the same pattern as The ’90s Are All That, being repetitive with it’s lineup and not showing a wide variety of shows. Then there are others… who are pretty much still disappointed that The Splat didn’t turn out to be an entire channel, as it was rumored to be.

I definitely appreciate the fact that more Nicktoons were added to the lineup such as All Grown Up, KaBlam! and As Told By Ginger, who’s pilot made it’s first TV premiere thanks to this block. What’s also a score is that The Splat has transformed to a full night stream that lasts from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., instead of the original 2-hour block when it was previously The 90’s Are All That. The more hours it lasts the more classic Nickelodeon fans like myself can throw ourselves all-nighters… with lots of snacks might I add. Now other than my appreciation for everything mentioned, I have to say that I do wish they could give the lineup a little mixing if you know what I mean. Sadly I can see this block is sort of falling into the same old pattern as it did before it was revamped. Showing the same shows every night isn’t going to make the viewers very happy, and the reason this block is even happening is because the fans petitioned for it. We love you guys at The Splat, but let’s switch it up sometimes!  Happy fans, happy life right? Btw my mouth dropped when I heard KaBlam! was apart of the lineup amid it’s 20th anniversary. My fangirl heart is very thankful.

Nickelodeon’s Classic Series ‘Hey Arnold!’ is now 20 Years Old

Photo: Nickelodeon

20 years ago on October 7, 1996, Nickelodeon gave us one of their biggest Nicktoons in history, and now our favorite football head is coming back to our TV screens in November 2017. Created by Craig Bartlett, we saw the main protagonist Arnold “Shortman” through his kid adventures from living in a boarding house with his grandparents and seven other renters to his journey with his friends/classmates Gerald, Phoebe, Helga, Harold, Stinky, Sid, Eugene & more try to conquer the struggles of being 4th graders.

Although the series officially ended on June 8, 2004, we haven’t seen the last of Arnold and the gang. After consideration of rebooting the series along with other classic Nicktoons, on November 23, 2015, Nickelodeon officially confirmed that a new Hey Arnold TV Movie was in the works and it would “answer every fan’s burning questions” including the whereabouts of Arnold’s parents, who were presumed to be missing throughout the entire series, which resulted in Arnold staying with his grandparents for good. The two-part TV movie is set to air on November 23, 2017 on Nickelodeon, two years after the announcement of the movie.

Happy 20th Anniversary Hey Arnold!, we will love and cherish you along with the other classic Nicktoons forever. Don’t miss a single post: follow Cartoon Buzz on Twitter @cartoonbuzznet!

Style of the Day: Miranda Killgallen Blazer Queen

“If I’d known you were like, clinically depressed, I might’ve gone a little easier on you… I mean there are days I really wished you’d disappear, but I had no idea you felt that way too!” – Miranda Killgallen, As Told By Ginger.

OUCH. We all know Miranda Killgallen as Courtney’s best gal pal – but Courtney is not even on Miranda’s level when it comes to everything that is pretty much evil and full of darkness. But damnit I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t my ultimate style muse, well besides Courtney. Miranda can serve piping hot insults AND looks at the same time, my idol. Today’s style inspo is dedicated to her navy blue blazer look that she wore in the cafeteria while laying a controversial comment on Ginger about her apparent depression. Such a bitch with iconic outfits. miranda-killgallen-blazer-style-inspo

Will Nickelodeon’s Newest Series ‘The Loud House’ Live to See More Than Two Seasons?

(c) Nickelodeon / Viacom

For the last decade SpongeBob SquarePants & Fairly OddParents have both taken the throne of Nickelodeon’s top animated series, thus becoming their top priorities. Could Nick’s newest animated series The Loud House be their next big show? Well let’s focus on three important things: the viewership, the ratings & the fans. Many animated shows have been cancelled after one or two seasons because of low viewership, ratings & the inability to really connect to those who watch cartoons. With social media being the primary target of interest to today’s youth, networks and producers have really went to the highest of levels to attract viewers from sites like Twitter & Instagram to make sure their show will have a fanbase. So far, does The Loud House have the viewers, fanbase & the ratings to become a long-lasting series or even gain a big time franchise with movie deals, fan collectables & video games like some of Nickelodeon’s top shows like SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents and even past shows that still has devoted fans like Rugrats, Hey Arnold & even Danny Phantom, who’s fans are petitioning for the show to be revived? Let’s take a look:

The Loud House was created by Chris Savino, who was a character designer, prop designer, storyboard artist & director at companies like Hanna-Barbera, Joe Murray & Nickelodeon  for past shows such as Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Cow and Chicken, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Test & Dexter’s Laboratory. So Savino has worked with shows that eventually became popular with booming viewers, so could his own creation get the same praise? The Loud House officially debuted it’s first season on Television May 2, 2016, bringing in over 2 million viewers in the U.S. alone. The episodes that followed after it’s premiere brought in an estimate of 1.7 million viewers. It’s most viewed episode was episode 16 “Out on a Limo”, which scored 2.21 million viewers. It may be impressive to some for a animated show in this decade that’s just starting out, but compared to SpongeBob’s  1999 debut viewership of 6.90 million for it’s first episode and even Sanjay and Craig and it’s 2013 debut of 3.56 million viewers… is it really impressive? Ratings could tell! IMDB gave the show a incredible 8.0/10 rating while Common Sense Media granted it with a 4/5 rating. Now THAT’S impressive. Not to mention the show receiving a huge praise from the general public for featuring Nickelodeon’s very first married gay couple who is bi-racial. Making history? Check!

(c) Nickelodeon / Viacom

On May 25, 2016, The Loud House was renewed for a 2nd season. Like stated before, many animated shows on Nickelodeon don’t live to see a third season so let’s not celebrate just yet. Monster vs. Aliens & Tak and the Power of Juju can count as a victim to that and Breadwinners which was booted off of Nickelodeon and moved to Nicktoons network. Although I have to say I do see a growing fandom for The Loud House (shoutout to you guys) so at this point… fingers crossed!

Meet Love, Angel, Music, Baby & G (Stefani) – aka the animated girlband HJ5 that are about to show Nickelodeon the meaning of kawaii.
